Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to learn Hiragana?
Most learners can memorize hiragana in 1–2 weeks with daily practice. Kanabloom's spaced-repetition flashcards help you retain characters faster by focusing on the ones you miss.
Should I learn Hiragana before Katakana?
Yes. Start with hiragana for native Japanese words, then katakana for loanwords. Kanabloom includes dedicated modes for each to build a strong foundation.
What's the best way to practice?
Short, consistent sessions with active recall and spaced repetition are best. Our revision mode automatically schedules reviews to maximize retention.
Is Kanabloom free to use?
Yes. Kanabloom offers a completely free Beginner Mode with no ads. Premium features like full hiragana, katakana, and Japanese Words modes are available through a one-time purchase.
How many characters are there?
Both hiragana and katakana have 46 basic characters each. With variations (dakuten and handakuten) there are about 71 sounds per script, and around 104 including combinations. Kanabloom covers all of them.
What is spaced repetition?
A scientifically-proven learning method that shows you flashcards right before you would forget them. This optimises memory retention and reduces study time.
Can I learn Japanese without Kanji?
Absolutely. Many Japanese texts for beginners use only hiragana and katakana. Mastering these scripts first gives you a solid foundation before tackling kanji.
Is Kanabloom available on Android?
Currently, Kanabloom is available for iOS devices (iPhone and iPad). We're focused on making the iOS experience exceptional before considering other platforms.
