Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to learn hiragana?
Most learners memorise hiragana in one to two weeks with short daily practice. Spaced-repetition flashcards speed this up by focusing on the characters you keep getting wrong. See our how to learn hiragana guide.
Should I learn hiragana or katakana first?
Learn hiragana first. It is used for native Japanese words and grammar, so you will see it from day one. Learn katakana next for loanwords and foreign names. Here is the full hiragana vs katakana comparison.
Is Kanabloom free?
Yes. Kanabloom is free to download and start learning, with no ads. A premium subscription (US$5.99 per month) unlocks the full hiragana and katakana sets, word mode, and custom practice. The charts, quiz, and romaji converter on this site are completely free with no sign-up.
How many hiragana and katakana characters are there?
Each script has 46 basic characters. With voiced sounds (dakuten and handakuten) you reach 71 sounds, and combination characters (yoon) bring the total to about 104 per script. Kanabloom covers them all.
What is spaced repetition?
A proven learning method that shows you a flashcard right before you would forget it. It stretches the gap between reviews as a character gets easier, so you spend your time only on what you are about to lose.
Is Kanabloom available on Android?
Kanabloom is currently available for iPhone and iPad. The free charts, quiz, and romaji converter on this website work in any browser, on any device.
