How to type Japanese in romaji

The converter reads romaji the way a Japanese keyboard does. Three small rules cover almost everything.

Long vowels

Spell the vowel out. Hold a sound for an extra beat by adding the vowel. In katakana mode, a hyphen becomes the long mark ー.

toukyou · ko-hi-

Double consonants

Double the letter to get the small tsu (っ), a short pause that doubles the next consonant.

kitte · gakkou

The ん sound

Type n before a consonant or at the end of a word. Add an apostrophe to force ん before a vowel.

nihon · hon'ya

Reading is step one. Remembering is the app.

Romaji converter FAQ

How do I convert romaji to hiragana?
Type romaji (the Latin-letter spelling of Japanese sounds) into the box, for example "konnichiwa", and the hiragana appears instantly. Switch the mode to get katakana instead, or choose Kana → Romaji and paste kana to convert it back.
How do I type long vowels and double consonants?
For long vowels, type the vowel out, for example "toukyou" gives とうきょう. In katakana mode a hyphen becomes the long vowel mark, so "ko-hi-" gives コーヒー. For a double consonant (small tsu), double the letter, so "kitte" gives きって.
How do I type ん (n)?
Type "n" before a consonant or at the end of a word, so "nihon" gives にほん. To force ん before a vowel, add an apostrophe: "hon'ya" gives ほんや.
What is the difference between romaji, hiragana, and katakana?
Romaji is Japanese written in Latin letters. Hiragana and katakana are the two Japanese kana scripts. Learn the difference in our hiragana vs katakana guide.
